Turkey, as mentioned in the article was one source. But the bulk of tobacco in Tsarist Russia (especially in the 19th century) came from eastern Ukraine, where Karaites (of Crimean origin) cultivated it on large estates. Indeed, tobacco processing and cigarette manufacture were very much in the hands of the Karaites. Might this have affected the use of tobacco among Jews in the Russian Empire?
